A plan to the exam

The course runs 7 weeks of content: NLP basics, RNNs, attention and transformers, then generative models, LLMs, the generative AI project lifecycle (prompting, fine-tuning, PEFT, RLHF, RAG, LangChain, deployment) and responsible AI. Questions here are written fresh for this site from the official syllabus; NPTEL does not publish past proctored papers for this course.

Where the marks are. Weeks 3, 5 and 6 carry the most testable detail: scaled dot-product attention, decoding settings (temperature, top-k, top-p), prompting styles, LoRA and other PEFT methods, the RLHF pipeline, RAG and evaluation metrics. Learn the formulas on the Numericals page; they turn into easy 2-mark questions.

19 Oct – 8 Nov · Phase 1

Weeks 1–3: foundations

  • Notes for weeks 1–3; redraw the attention diagram from memory
  • TF-IDF, cosine similarity, softmax and attention numericals
  • Practice W1–W3 until you score 80%+

9 Nov – 22 Nov · Phase 2

Weeks 4–5: generative models & LLMs

  • Autoencoders, VAEs, GANs, diffusion, CLIP: one line each on how they train
  • Decoding and prompting; BERT vs GPT vs T5
  • Practice W4–W5, then all 40 must-know questions

23 Nov – 6 Dec · Phase 3

Weeks 6–7 + first mocks

  • Lifecycle, fine-tuning, PEFT/LoRA maths, RLHF, RAG, LangChain, deployment
  • Responsible AI: bias, hallucination, privacy, IP, guardrails
  • Sit mock Paper 1 in exam mode; review every miss

7 Dec – 11 Dec · Final days

Mocks and light review

  • Papers 2 and 3, then a random paper
  • Traps list + formula sheet the night before
  • Hall ticket + original photo ID on exam day
  • For "select all" questions, judge each option on its own
